Butterball

Tomorrow is the day that I'm off to my parents for Thanksgiving weekend celebrations. It should be a nice family visit even though my little sister is off working on a cruise ship somewhere. When she missed Christmas a couple of years ago, one of my brothers reported back to her that it was "The best Christmas EVER!" I'm sure that he'll say the same thing again about this holiday.

My dad has seen many wild turkey tracks all around my parents' property…I hope he doesn't get any ideas. Our turkey dinner better be of the Butterball brand!

My plans for the weekend are to hang out with my siblings and to play guitar. I really need to relearn some of my older songs if I'm to have enough material to start playing again. Good thing I've kept my first guitar up at my parents' place. It's always nice to sit back and play in a place where I have lots of memories of learning how to play guitar and writing some of my first songs.

Not a conventional woman

I'm no chefThanksgiving is almost here which means another great big Clemens Clan dinner. I'm thinking of breaking the routine a bit by perhaps contributing something to the feast, other than my usual nachos. I will admit that I don't enjoy cooking AT ALL. That includes broiling, barbequing, baking - all of it. I hate it almost as much as shopping. I guess you could call me the antithesis of the conventional woman.

But let me get back to Thanksgiving dinner.

First I thought I could write a Thanksgiving song, but somehow all my songs turn out less than cheery. My family may not enjoy my take on gobbling turkeys and where to stuff the stuffing. I would write a song about making pies but it's already been done. (Thanks, Patty Griffin.) Any interpretive art displays may bring back bad memories of Thanksgivings past, like when I decided to finally dress up for dinner - by putting on my mother's old too-short polyester pants, flowered blouse with the big bow and so-not-matching periwinkle blue cardigan.

I will continue to ponder my options.

Six days and counting...

Battle of the Bands

I recently received an email from a girl that had just won first place at her school's Battle Of The Bands for playing my song, I Don't Want To Be Me. It's very cool for me to hear about things like this! It also makes me reminisce…

I was never in any Battle Of The Bands when I was younger (my high school was VERY small) but I do remember the first time I let my friends listen to one of my basement tapes that I had just started making.

I didn't really build up the presentation; I just threw the tape in the car stereo as we drove to see a movie. I can still see clearly in my mind the distasteful and disinterested face one of my friends made as she listened to my version of the Crowded House song, You Better Be Home Soon, which really hurt my feelings.

I tried to suck it up as she started making fun of the quality of the tape - but hey, all I had was my little tape player that I would sing into, what did she expect?? As she noticed the devastated look on my face, she seemed perplexed. Only then did I realize that she thought that the recording was a bad quality bootleg.

Once we had straightened out what the tape actually was, she did say some nice things. I got over the damaged to my frail teenage ego and started playing 'live' in my school hallways shortly after.

Congratulations, Candace, on your amazing first place win!
